The empty road

 I see this empty road
under northern stars
Only the moon lights my way
before wind and rain

You came to me tonight
A smile out of darkness
framed against a sunset
of years ago

I see this empty road
beside the swirling sea
waves running ashore
carrying memories on their crests

You are with me
a silent smile
in familiar lights
where I knew you for so long

I see this empty road
paved with shells and stones
fingers of sand
challenging my way

You were, and are, always with me
Perhaps still wondering
about wandering
but always knowing I was you

I see this empty road
full of people
framed in a moving window
taking you away

You have always been with me
You never went away
I still hear your voice
from across what now keeps us apart

I see this empty road
But I am not alone
Whilst you are now gone
You walk with me always

The two lighthouses
The one across the harbour
The other on a hilltop
All four - lighting my way
