The five empty chairs in this image signify each year of losses during the Great War, 1914-1918. It was an installation that was on display in Lews Castle in 2016, during the centenary commemoration of the First World War.
Ever since, an empty chair has come to signify the loss of a person close to me. Two relatives, and a close friend. The chairs denoting the loss of my relatives are no longer in position, and I do not know of their fate.
The chair belonging to the friend is still there, and occupied by a feline companion who somehow, more than two years later, expects their return.
